ART: Hampton University Translating Innovation into Patents (HU-TIPs)

Executive Summary:

Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a unique opportunity to address inequities in commercialization, tech transfer, and venture capital access by restructuring training programs and strengthening networks. Through the initiative called ART: Hampton University Translating Innovation into Patents (HU-TIPS), we aim to create a national model that accelerates the rate of tech transfer and commercialization practices at HBCUs.

Core Objectives:

  1. Train ART Ambassadors: HU-TIPS will support four cohorts of 50 ART Ambassadors, totaling 200 individuals, from HBCUs. These ambassadors will receive specialized training in translating fundamental research into commercializable innovations. The training will focus on consensus-based practices and proven strategies for effective tech transfer.
  2. Institutionalize Translational Research Practices: HU-TIPS will provide resources and guidance to HBCUs to help them institutionalize translational research practices within their respective institutions. This will involve developing policies, frameworks, and infrastructure that support and promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and tech transfer.
  3. Measure Collective Impact: The effectiveness of the network approach to collective impact in the area of use-inspired and translational research practices will be measured. By tracking the progress and outcomes of HU-TIPS, we will assess the impact of the program on tech transfer, commercialization rates, and the overall success of HBCU innovators and researchers.

Approach:

HU-TIPS will leverage a Community of Practice (CoP) approach to create a network of ART Ambassadors. This CoP will foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and mentorship among HBCU innovators and researchers, promoting a culture of translational research and innovation. The network will provide ongoing support, resources, and opportunities for HBCUs to engage in tech transfer and commercialization activities.

Expected Impact:

  • Increased commercialization and tech transfer rates at HBCUs, leading to greater economic opportunities and wealth creation within HBCU communities.
  • Strengthened networks and collaborations between HBCUs, industry partners, venture capital firms, and other stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem.
  • Enhanced visibility and recognition of HBCU contributions to innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
  • Creation of a national model that can be replicated and scaled to benefit other HBCUs and underrepresented communities across the country.

By establishing HU-TIPS and nurturing a network of ART Ambassadors, we believe that HBCUs can disrupt inequities and play a vital role in driving innovation, commercialization, and economic empowerment. Together, we can create a more inclusive and equitable landscape for translational research and entrepreneurship within the HBCU community and beyond.
